What is a secular AA meeting? ›

Secular: Secular AA meetings lack a faith-based component of healing and tend to focus on practical experiences and challenges. Secular meetings are usually attended by atheist, agnostic, and non-religious members.

The AA Group Conscience is the collective voice of the members of an AA group, from any part of AA's service structure. The Group Conscience is a shared decision reached by a careful and respectful process where everyone has a voice, and everyone listens. The process is used whenever a considered decision is required.

When AA uses the phrase “An attitude of gratitude” they often mean “practicing gratitude”. This means that you should be grateful for everything as part of your life and consistently recognize and be aware of the good things that happen to you, no matter how small.

AA Grapevine is the international journal of Alcoholics Anonymous. Written, edited, illustrated, and read by AA members and others interested in the AA program of recovery from alcoholism, Grapevine is a lifeline linking one alcoholic to another.

The 12 steps of AA can be reinterpreted for atheists and agnostics who may be uncomfortable with the religious language. AA without God is based on the same principles and steps. 1. We admitted that we were powerless over alcohol and that our lives had become unmanageable.

AA Agnostica and Secular AA are two groups promoting the religion-free version of AA. Secular AA groups do not recite prayers at the beginning or end of their meetings, nor do they suggest that a belief in God is required to get sober or maintain sobriety – a key difference from traditional AA.

The main difference between meetings and groups is that A.A. groups generally continue to exist outside the prescribed meeting hours, ready to provide Twelfth Step help when needed. A.A. groups are encouraged to register with G.S.O., as well as with their local offices: area, dis- trict, intergroup or central office.

True humility and an open mind can lead us to faith, and every A.A. meeting is an assurance that God will restore us to sanity if we rightly relate ourselves to Him. "Sanity" is defined as "soundness of mind." 12&12 Step Two, p.33. "Sanity" is defined as "soundness of mind."

A core component of AA is the belief that addiction doesn't derive from pleasure, but rather from psychological suffering.

Some A.A. slogans can be used as topics—such as “Live and Let Live,” “Easy Does It,” “First Things First,” and “H.A. LT.” (Don't get too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired). 8. Other topics may be found in AA Grapevine's monthly section on “Discussion Topics.”

Discussion. Open (OD) or closed (CD), discussion meetings mean someone will introduce a topic related to sobriety that the rest of the group will discuss. Speaker. Open (OS) or closed (CS), speaker meetings include an A.A. member sharing his or her story of recovery.

Whether closed or open, an A.A. member serving as “leader” or “chair” opens the meeting using that group's format, and selects a topic for discussion.

Cross talking in A.A. is when a person gives advice to others who have already shared their stories. The individual speaks to them directly, instead of speaking to the group as a whole. Cross talk can also include interrupting the person who is speaking or asking them a question unexpectedly.

Secularism also encompasses practices such as non-religious national (for example, Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand) and cultural events (for example, New Year Celebrations across the globe), which can be seen as secular rituals that bind communities together.

AA Agnostica is meant to be a helping hand for the alcoholic who reaches out to Alcoholics Anonymous for help and finds that she or he is disturbed by the religious content of many AA meetings. For this reason, AA Agnostica is not affiliated with any group in AA or any other organization.

Just as religious rituals separate the “sacred” from the “mundane,” secular rituals separate the “special” from the “ordinary.” A great example is a college commencement ceremony.

Secular Orders and Associations are extensions of religious orders but are intended for those not taking holy vows. The purpose of these secular orders and associations is to unite laity, religious and priests who are called to follow Christ with examples set forth by their patrons.
