Number 226 Sunday June 3 1979 One Section ourteen Pages Bank robber killed three counties involved By PEGGY ERGUSON Sentinel City Editor Three counties joined in a search Saturday for the man suspected of rob bing the Rainsville Bank The search ended in Marshall County with the death Rainsville Police Chief Jerry arris identified the man as 24 year old Gary Neil of Wedowee (Randolph County) According to arris Neil was fatally wounded either by a shot from Grant police or from the impact when he fell from his Suzuki 750 which he was riding when he tried to evade a road block arris said the man had gone into the Rainsville Bank prior to the robbery and had 50 one dollar bills exchanged for one fifty dollar bill At approximately 11:45 am Satur day he re entered the bank went to the same teller and presented her with a note demanding the money The note said money is insured Your life and mine are not Put the money in No amount of money was specified He reportedly fled the bank on a motorcycle No other persons are believed involved in the robbery in Dekalb County At that time explained arris an ex tensive search got under way in Dekalb Marshall and Jackson Counties for the suspect State troopers and city units from Scottsboro Grant and Rain sville as well as the sheriff departments in each of the county joined in the sear ch Neil was spotted by officers in the Grant area and road blocks were set up in the vicinity He was shot by a Grant policeman when he apparently reached for a pistol He then fell from his motor cycle This was between Grant and the new highway near Woodville arris said the coroner had not given a ruling on whether death was caused by the shot or from the impact when he fell from the motorcycle The approximately $2000 taken from Rainsville Bank was recovered However arris said Neil has some $10000 on him It is believed that at least a portion of this money was ob tained in a bank robbery riday in neighboring Georgia Items stolen from vehicle Stevenson police are continuing their investigation into the theft earlier this week of some $450 in items taken from a van parked in that town Randy Parnell told police entry was gained into Dennis Hanco*ck The award sponsored nationwide by Dekalb AgResearch In is presented to the senior agriculture student attaining the highest degree of proficiency in scholarship leadership and a super vised agricultural program While a student at Section High School Hanco*ck was vice president and sentinal of the local A Chapter senior class officer and elected Mr A shopping center is well under construction in Hollywood According to Bud Christa Hollywood there will be facilities for four large or eight smaller stores Christa plans to have a hardware store in the new facility Oliver Machen is
