The Type 1 Faithful Wing-class heavy cruiser is from the same generation of Romulan starships as the V-30 Winged Defender Heavy Cruiser and the Z-1 Nova battleship. Entering service in 2279, Its primary purpose was to provide fleet support for battleships and other large vessels. Unlike the Winged Defender, it lacks the raw power and maneuverability required for the mobile support/heavy scouting role it’s cousins fulfill. The lack of power impacted the vessel’s combat agility, causing V-37 captains to rely primarily on the ships cloaking ability for ambush strikes using their heavy torpedo capacity while allocating minimum power to their beam weapons. This tactic proved extremely effective, giving the V-37 a powerful first strike capability.
The class primarily relied on the RPL-3 plasma weapon torpedo coupled with two RP-3 photon torpedo tubes, and two RB-9 disruptors, all focused in the forward arc. One RP-2 torpedo tube fires into the port and starboard arcs, and additional RB-9s firing 1f/p, 1 f/s, 1a/p, and 1 a/s rounding out the disruptor arsenal. The missile weapon coverage was complemented by a RP-2 torpedo tube firing aft. The ships were equipped with the RCD cloaking device.
With a total of over 300 SCU, the double-hull design surpasses the cargo capacity of most Romulan ships in its class giving the V-37 extended range compared to other vessels of its size.
A total of 52 Type 1s were fielded before production was switched to the Type 2. Initial intelligence reports indicate that 2 Type 1s were destroyed and 3 have been scrapped. The remainder were converted to Type 2s.
The Type 2 which was introduced in 2290, marked a major improvement. The ship’s computer, warp engines, and shields were all upgraded. The RB-9s were replaced with RB-12s with two additional weapon ports added, The photon torpedo tubes were all upgraded to the RP-5, making maintenance easier. The modifications led to a 10% increase in power and a 20% boost in efficiency. The tactical upgrades led to a nearly 83% boost in overall vessel performance.
The Type 2 was produced through 2302 when the final hull was launched. 39 new build hulls were commissioned. 5 Type 2s are listed as destroyed, 1 is listed as missing and 4 here scrapped. 76 were eventually converted to Type 3s.
The Type 3 again saw improvements to the primary computer, weapon and – most notably – the shield system. The new RSW shield did require the V-37’s RCD cloaking device to be refit with a 3rd generation model, but was successfully relaunched in 2337, remining in general service until 2380. A total of 76 Type 3s were fielded, serving against the Gorn, Klingons and eventually the Dominion in a somewhat reduced capacity.
Of the 76 Type 3s fielded, 11 are in service with the Romulan Free States although most are expected to be retired or sold soon due to their age. 20 are in reserve fleets, 7 have been destroyed, 1 was captured by Cardassian forces during the Dominion War, 2 are listed as missing, and 8 have been scrapped over the years. 7 Type 3s have been traded to various governments and 20 were sold to help fund relocation efforts after the destruction of Romulus.
The vessel is named from the Cordaihkh Aen, a popular eagle-sized avian found in Umrika. It is know for its loyalty and protective nature and is often used as a guardian for Romulan children in suburban and wild areas. The vessels was produced at the Corill Imperial Construction Drydock and Romulan Naval Construction Yards 1, 2 and 4.
